The platypus is without a doubt the most diverse and unique animal on the face of the earth. It’s a mammal, yet it lays eggs. It’s part duck and part beaver. It’s poisonous, and it can predict the movements of predators thanks to it’s bill! But what does the noble platypus have to do with Platypus Inc?

Aside from sharing a name, we identify with this amphibious denizen. Platypus Media, Advertising & Design, a web design company,  is a unique animal when it comes to our understanding of developing an online presence–and well prepared to guide you through the muddy waters of online marketing.

DONALD BURKHOLDER

PRESIDENT & FOUNDER

  • BS in Marketing from ASU.
  • 2 years of core engineering.

What inspired you to start your own business?
I had a desire to create a place where people enjoyed their work and they could make a difference. It came from years of frustration of working with corporate bureaucracy.

Favorite business-related book and why.
Atlas Shrugged. People often misunderstand the concept of money and productive people; this book explains it well.

Who is your mentor?
I need one! Been operating “out of the box” my entire life. I enjoy learning from everyone around me. I couldn’t give credit to any one person.

You will never see me without my…
iPhone! No piece of hardware has ever changed my life more. Jury is out on whether that is a good thing!

What drives you everyday to succeed?
I feel complete, relaxed, and proud at the end of a day when I have been productive.

Where do you think the future of SMB online advertising will be in 5 years?
The internet has created a revolution for small businesses to once again differentiate themselves from corporate giants. While most SMB’s are not taking full advantage of the landscape right now, I foresee a resurgence of small niche businesses outpacing the big box stores. I also see an opportunity to once again compete on much more than just price when companies are given a forum to tell their unique stories..

What make Platypus unique?
It lays eggs. We are unique in our approach that we believe that every employee can make our products and company better. We just have to be careful to listen.

Three fun facts about you:

  • I was first chair trumpet player for nearly 9 years in school.
  • I tied for third in the state of Arizona for vaulting in gymnastics.
  • Oingo Boingo was my favorite 80’s band. I went to nearly every one of their concerts in Tempe.

  • University of Washington Graduate
  • 14 years of experience in software engineering
  • Worked at several startups companies to large financial companies.

How did you get your start in the Web Development/Management systems’ industry?
I got my start out at Trendwest Resorts as a Perl programmer. I was self taught, which lead me to learn a variety of different coding languages. Seeing challenges as opportunities rather than roadblocks has allowed me to enjoy success in this industry.

What has been the most dramatic change in technology over the past 5 years, and how has that inspired you as CTO of Platypus?
Mobile technology has been the biggest game changer. It inspired me to actually branch out to be a CTO and try to run the tech organization and create great mobile apps that our clients and other companies can use.

Three fun facts about you:

  • I know how to sail.
  • I used to want to be a farmer and take over the family farm in Oregon.
  • My preferred way to destress is through video games.

How did you get your start working in digital media & marketing, and then at Platypus?
I’ve been involved with digital media since I was very young, and doing digital projects, movies, videos. Marketing these products online has always been part of the process. I was doing a video for my high school at which point I was introduced to [fellow owner] John Heffron. John liked me so much that he asked me to do a few projects for Platypus and I met Bert.

What’s the most exciting part about working in the New Media industry?
Learning and keeping up to date on all the new technology, as well as building strategies for businesses.

  • I’m a Twin
  • Both parents were born in Italy
  • I have a son name Kaylen who is 7

JOHN HEFFRON

VIDEO PRODUCTION MANAGER

  • Graduated from The University of Washington with a BA in Political Science
  • Graduated from Elkins Institute in Denver where I received an FCC 1st Class License which allowed me to operate a television transmitter.
  • Worked in all aspects of broadcast television in South Dakota including director of live programming such as newscasts and other live events
  • Started and ran my own production company for 13 years.

How did you get your start at Platypus as an owner/partner?
I first met Bert when he came to my production facility and asked for help producing a series of consumer information videos. We worked well together and the rest they say is history.

What’s the most exciting thing about Digital Media now?
The most exciting thing about digital media now is how fast technology is evolving. We are able to produce videos that are 10 times better with far less equipment than when I started in the industry.

If you had one piece of career advice, what would it be?
The biggest advice I give to young people interested in video production is to curb their expectations. It is a lot of hard work and success does not automatically translate into wealth. Technology is constantly changing and keeping abreast of it is a challenge.

What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, what little there is, I like to watch my youngest daughter play soccer. It has consumed most of our free time for the last 10 years. I also enjoy going to our cabin in the Okanagans just to get away from the world. No phones or television.

CINDY HEFFRON

was elected President of Emerald Productions, Inc. by the Board of Directors in December of 1994 and became majority stockholder in February 1995. At that time Emerald Productions, Inc. became one of the few woman owned video production businesses in the Seattle area. I managed business operations and also wrote scripts for educational, training, and promotional video programs.

How did you get involved with Platypus?
Platypus Productions contracted Emerald for scripting, videography, and editing services 1996-1998. I had the opportunity to provide scriptwriting. During that time we formed a cohesive and symbiotic relationship which lead to my formally becoming a shareholder and partner at Platypus Productions in 1999.

From 1999 to present day I am a shareholder and a member of Platypus Production’s Board of Directors.

Fun Facts:

  • I developed my competitive nature growing up as the only girl in a family with five brothers
  • I wrote a monthly column for the Seattle Chapter Women in Film Newspaper (1995)
  • I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (2005)
